Screen Shaker

Screen Shaker is used to determine particle size distribution and gradation of crushed stone, sand, and gravel. Samples are quickly processed into as many as seven separations in a liter as three to five minutes with the vibrating mechanism that shakes a stack of sieves containing the aggregate sample. By analyzing the distribution of particles across different sieve sizes, engineers and researchers can assess the quality and properties of the aggregate material, which is crucial for various construction applications such as concrete, asphalt, and road bases.

Typical batch sizes up to one cubic foot (0.028 m?) or more vary with material type. Mechanical clamping is easily secured in place by a few quick strokes. (The unit comes with a supporting backup clutch for the tray and is hooked for tensioning finer sizes screening). Supply without screen tray, need to order separately.

Features of Screen Shaker

  • Rapid Separation Processing: Samples can be quickly processed into multiple separations, typically ranging from three to seven separations in as little as three to five minutes.
  • Vibrating Mechanism: Utilizes a vibrating mechanism to shake a stack of sieves containing the aggregate sample. This shaking action facilitates the separation of particles based on size.
  • Particle Size Analysis: Enables engineers and researchers to analyze the distribution of particles across different sieve sizes. This analysis is crucial for assessing the quality and properties of the aggregate material.
  • Versatile Batch Sizes: Capable of handling typical batch sizes up to one cubic foot (0.028 m?) or more, with variations depending on the type of material being tested.
  • Mechanical Clamping: Equipped with a mechanism for easily securing the stack of sieves in place with just a few quick strokes. This ensures stability during the testing process.
  • Backup Clutch: Includes a supporting backup clutch for the tray, providing additional stability and support, particularly for tensioning finer sizes of screening.
  • Optional Accessories: These may come with optional accessories such as a machine dust cover, dust tray, and an Armortron controller with a mounting bracket for added functionality and convenience.

Standards?

  • ASTM C136: This is a standard test method established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) titled “Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates.” It provides procedures for conducting sieve analysis on aggregates to determine their particle size distribution. The test method outlines the equipment, procedures, and calculations required for accurate analysis.
  • EN 933-2: This standard is part of the European Norm (EN) series and is titled “Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates – Part 2: Determination of particle size distribution – Test sieves, nominal size of apertures.” It specifies the method for determining the particle size distribution of aggregates using test sieves. Similar to ASTM C136, it provides guidelines for equipment, procedures, and calculations.
  • ISO 3310-2: This is an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard titled “Test sieves — Technical requirements and testing — Part 2: Test sieves of the perforated metal plate.” It outlines technical requirements and testing procedures for test sieves made of perforated metal plates used in particle size analysis. This standard ensures the quality and accuracy of test sieves used in various industries, including construction and materials testing.

Test Procedure of Screen Shaker

  • Preparation of Equipment:
      • Ensure that the screen shaker is set up correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
      • Assemble the necessary sieves onto the shaker, ensuring they are securely clamped in place.
      • Verify that the shaker is clean and free from any debris that could affect the test results.

  • Sample Preparation:
      • Obtain a representative sample of the aggregate material to be tested. The sample should be large enough to provide statistically significant results.
      • If necessary, reduce the sample size using a sample splitter to obtain a manageable amount for testing.
      • Thoroughly mix the sample to ensure uniform distribution of particles.
  • Sieve Loading:
      • Place the prepared sample onto the top sieve of the stack.
      • If multiple sieves are used, ensure that each sieve is stacked in descending order of sieve opening size, with the finest sieve on the bottom and the coarsest sieve on top.
      • Cover the stack of sieves with a lid or a pan to prevent material loss during shaking.
  • Shaking Procedure:
      • Start the screen shaker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
      • Set the appropriate shaking duration and intensity based on the characteristics of the aggregate material and the testing standards being followed (e.g., ASTM, EN, ISO).
      • Allow the shaker to run for the specified duration, typically ranging from a few minutes to several minutes.

  • Completion of Shaking:
      • Once the shaking is complete, switch off the screen shaker and carefully remove the stack of sieves.
      • Inspect each sieve to ensure that all material has been properly separated according to particle size.

  • Particle Size Analysis:
    • Weigh the material retained on each sieve to determine the mass of particles within each size fraction.
    • Calculate the percentage of material retained on each sieve relative to the total sample mass.
    • Optionally, perform additional calculations or analyses based on the specific requirements of the testing standards or project specifications.
